Ending the Year With Gratitude: Finding Contentment in God’s Faithfulness

As the year comes to a close, I find myself wondering how it went by so quickly.
When I am not working for Christian Stewardship Network, I am balancing life with a preschooler and a toddler. I genuinely love this season, but it is full. Most evenings, I feel as if I have completed a marathon by the time the kids’ bedroom door closes. Toys and crayons cover the floor, laundry waits to be folded, and the next day’s obligations are already calling.
It is easy to move from one task to the next, always looking ahead to the next appointment, event, deadline, or item on the list. But the end of the year gives us an opportunity to pause and reflect.
Before we rush into another holiday gathering, another school party, or another full calendar, we can take a moment to remember what God has done.
Gratitude Changes Our Perspective
Gratitude is more than a positive attitude when life is going well. It is a response to the character and faithfulness of God.
The apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 4:11-13:
“I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”
These verses are often quoted as encouragement for accomplishing difficult things. But Paul was writing about contentment in every kind of circumstance. He had experienced hardship, loss, persecution, and imprisonment. His confidence was not rooted in a comfortable life. It was rooted in Christ.
That is an important reminder as we end the year. Some of us are celebrating answered prayers and meaningful milestones. Others are carrying disappointment, grief, financial pressure, exhaustion, or uncertainty about what comes next.
No matter what kind of year you have had, God has been present.
God Is Faithful in Every Season
It is easy to feel grateful when life is going the way we hoped. It takes deeper faith to recognize God’s goodness when life feels difficult or unfinished.
Psalm 103:2 says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” Gratitude invites us to remember. It helps us notice God’s provision, His kindness, His sustaining grace, and the ways He has carried us through moments we may have otherwise overlooked.
Sometimes gratitude looks like thanking God for a major blessing. Sometimes it looks like thanking Him for daily bread, a warm home, a friend who called at the right time, strength for another day, or the grace to keep going when life felt heavy.
Life itself is a gift. And for those who belong to Christ, we have the assurance that He walks with us through both joy and sorrow.
A Simple Way to End the Year With Gratitude
Before the year ends, take a few quiet moments to reflect with God. You may want to write down your answers to a few simple questions:
Where did I see God’s faithfulness this year?
What prayers did He answer?
What challenges did He carry me through?
What people, opportunities, or provisions am I grateful for?
Where do I need to trust Him more in the year ahead?
You do not need a perfect year to be grateful. Gratitude does not deny hardship. It helps us see hardship in light of God’s presence and promises.
As the holiday season becomes busy, do not miss the opportunity to slow down. Gather with the people you love. Enjoy the traditions. Bake the pies. But make room to remember the One who has been faithful through every day of the year.
Whatever this year held, God has not left you.
And that is always worth giving thanks for.
